Sarah, Head of Cosmetics Division

I joined Max Sauer in 2013 as a Product Manager at what is known locally as “Raphaël Brushes.” My first role focused on developing new brushes for fine artists, particularly those working with watercolor and acrylic. It was an incredibly enriching experience. I quickly learned that artists expect a high level of precision and performance from their brushes –  just like makeup artists do!

To meet the artists expectations, I collaborated closely with our partner artists to test each brush, then worked with the production and design teams to fine-tune every detail. With no formal training path or “brushmaking school,” I learned everything on the job. This hands-on, immersive approach became the foundation of my expertise.

From the start, I was surprised by the depth of experience within our teams and the strong culture of knowledge sharing. Many employees had been with the company for decades, and I saw how know-how was passed down through internal training and mentorship.

Before joining Max Sauer, I gained experience working with major cosmetics groups, which gave me a strong foundation in the beauty industry. While I initially joined the company to develop brushes for fine artists, my background made it a natural step to later move into the cosmetics brush division. Today, as Director of this business unit, my role is to drive growth by supporting existing clients, expanding into new markets, and building partnerships with emerging brands.

In doing so, we help preserve the heritage of traditional French brushmaking, carried on by the skilled artisans in our factories. However, we are committed to more than just preservation, we aim to renew this craftsmanship through innovation. Our clients play an active role in this process by challenging us with creative and technical requests that push us forward.
